Explorations
In Engineering
Specifically targeting students from populations underrepresented in engineering and science fields (minority or economically disadvantaged students), the
Explorations in Engineering Workshop allows high school freshmen, sophomores, and juniors the opportunity to investigate college options and careers in these fields. Practicing minority engineers from industry and the government, educators, and university faculty lead informational sessions and discussions. Each session includes a laboratory experience, a team engineering project, and time to interact formally and informally with role models and talented peers.
The workshop is a week-long investigation of engineering careers in areas such as mechanical, environmental, electrical, chemical, civil, geological, and metallurgical engineering, as well as other related disciplines such as mathematics, engineering technology, technical writing, and computer science. During the workshop, you will have the opportunity to:
- Explore different areas of engineering
- Discover team skills and apply what you are learning about engineering during a group project
- Learn how to succeed in engineering and science undergraduate programs
- Investigate career opportunities, military opportunities, and cooperative education
- Become acquainted with college life and check out extracurricular activities on campus
- Meet other young people with similar backgrounds and interests
- Enjoy a variety show and other recreational activities in the spectacular natural setting of Michigan's Upper Peninsula
On request, arrangements can be made for you to talk with university resource people from disciplines or areas in which you have special interests or concerns, as well as Admissions and Financial Aid staff.
Please note that the workshop schedule is intense, but it will provide you with a unique chance to discover the unlimited opportunities that careers in engineering and related disciplines can offer.
