Just For Parents :: What to Bring
Informal clothing is appropriate for all activities. The weather may vary from hot and dry to cool and wet. A lightweight jacket should be sufficient for cooler evenings. Students should also bring rain gear in case of inclement weather. Spending money is not required but is strongly recommended. All instructional material is provided at no additional cost, but students do have the opportunity to attend concerts, golf, bowl, see movies, buy pizza, and so on. If you would like to participate in some of these activities, or shop at the University Bookstore or elsewhere in the area, some amount of spending money is encouraged. Extra money, airline tickets, and other valuables should be checked in at the reception desk for safekeeping. Personal checks, money orders, and traveler's checks can be cashed at the MTU Cashier's Office ($100.00 limit). Students must be accompanied by a counselor to cash a check.

The residence hall provides bedding, pillows, sheets, and pillowcases. Washers and dryers are located in the residence hall; there is a minimal charge for their use. Students may purchase detergent at the reception desk. Students should bring their own towels, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, and other personal items. Fans are strongly recommended. Counselors can wake up students in the morning, but an alarm clock can be helpful. Recreational equipment is provided for most activities. Students may bring fishing gear, ice skates, roller blades, etc., but protective equipment must be worn when necessary. Trips to the beach and/or pool are planned each evening, so bring your swimsuit. A detailed "what to bring" list will be included in the pre-program mailings. This list will contain specific information about each exploration.

***NOTE: Under the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Act, students are required to wear long pants or a long skirt and closed-toe shoes while working in any engineering or science laboratory. NO SANDALS ALLOWED!

All students should bring long pants and appropriate footwear, even if lab activities are not anticipated in their exploration.
